Description

Winter Calling is a colourful English winter landscape with snow glimpsed through the last leaves of autumn. It is 36x24x1.5 inches. This painting was made after a winter walk I took near the Mayfield area of Sussex, where many small hills and vales are part of the High Weald (formerly a vast ancient forest in the south of England). This view was one I came across of a farm on a hill with light snow around it, seen from a small woodland. Some of the leaves were still on the trees in reds and golds, and the dark green of ivy on the oak tree trunks. I love the contrast of cold colours to warm colours. Like most of my landscape paintings, this is not an unusual subject, but I have nevertheless tried to portray it uniquely so that some of the longing I feel for such places is expressed (yes, I desperately wish I lived on that farm). The painting is on wide-edge canvas, painted a muted purple colour which integrates into the edges of the painting and helps propel the viewer into the scenery.
