“Sleepy little owl! Is he just waking up, or is he settling into his comfy nest for the night, contemplating the day just finished?

This cute little soul is neatly nestled inside his hollow tree, and it was a lovely challenge to be able to make realistic-looking bark and the inside of the tree. In some areas, the watercolours were washed on and then salt was added to create the ‘speckled’ finish. Fine lines were drawn on with fine line ink pens to further add depth and texture, and finally, soft pastel was pulled across the rough paper in areas to add even more texture and highlight in areas on the tree trunk.

I have a great fondness for owls of every type, and the cosiness of this little chap appealed to me straight away and still makes me wonder if his day is ending or beginning.” Helen Worthington
