Description
A Country Stile
Another of my series entitled ‘Doorways, Gateways and Portals to Beyond’, this piece is a local scene from the Rivington area between Chorley and Bolton.
For this piece, I’ve tried to use the watercolours in quite a loose fashion to emphasise the softness of the foliage around the old stone steps and wooden stile. There is a sense of ‘what lies beyond’ the stile, and the viewer is invited to wonder what they may find if they climb over the stile and continue along this country path.
The colours and lightness of the foliage may suggest an autumnal feel or even early winter, but there is a definite a feeling of light to this piece and I hope it presents a calming and peaceful scene. Humans have built the structures we see here, but the feeling is one of freedom and possibility due to the way that nature is still very strongly in evidence.
This is watercolour work, using quite wet washes of soft colours, broken to form the sky and foliage, encouraging a sense of lightness and depth. The stone and woodwork are suggested rather than detailed, thereby allowing the eye to fill in what it wishes to see. Helen Worthington
