Description
Another of my series entitled ‘Doorways, Gateways and Portals to Beyond’, this gate is on the beautiful Llandwyn Island, just off the coast at Newborough on Anglesey, North Wales.
One of my favourite places in the whole world is the Isle of Anglesey, and my parents lived there for 20 years until they moved back to Lancashire in 2017, allowing me to go for regular visits for a fix of sea air and ozone!
Llandwyn Island has a lovely old lighthouse, pilots’ cottages and a ruined Abbey, along with a Celtic and a Christian cross. Its only inhabitants now are the sheep and birds that live there, making it an idyllic place to walk and find peace. There are a couple of these beautifully carved gates onto the Island and this one appealed to me particularly as you can see the possibilities of the views beyond, which take you to stunning cliffs as well as the landmarks mentioned above.
The soft grasses blow in the sea breeze and the old dry-stone walls are weathered and craggy. The gateposts are windblown and rusted where the metal screws hold pieces in place.
This watercolour work uses washes of soft colours, and then overlays of ink and pen to give form to the grasses and stonework, creating plenty of interest for the eyes. I hope the viewer will gain a sense of interest, freshness and possibility of a fabulous place to explore in this work. Helen Worthington
