Skipton Doorway

Another of my series entitled ‘Doorways, Gateways and Portals to Beyond’, this is a painting of a beautiful old wooden door set into a warm sandstone archway in Skipton, West Yorkshire.

I have a deep interest in the question of ‘what lies beyond’ (see my bio for more explanation of this), and a closed-door is the most familiar sight we may be aware of that emphasises this question.  We can be safe behind a door, or we can be imprisoned by that very same door – which do we feel?

In this watercolour painting, the warmth of the stonework is so lovely and provokes a feeling of a bright day with the sun falling onto the ancient irregular-shaped stones.  Even though the stonework is robust, the softness of the shrubbery in front of it serves to soften and enhance the sense of life continuing regardless of the surroundings.  The old stone steps lead us to the interesting door.

The depth of colour in the door itself is varied and warm, while the ornate ironwork gives a strong sense of security and reliability, using materials that were definitely built to survive the test of time.  Indeed, the ironwork was quite a challenge to paint accurately in watercolour.  Helen Worthington
