Description
“This is one of a number of paintings in my series entitled ‘Doorways, Gateways and Portals to Beyond’, and is a local scene from near the Chinese Gardens in the Rivington area between Chorley and Bolton.
The beauty of the light falling on the steps enchanted me when I first saw the reference photograph a friend shared with me, and for me it’s a calming and peaceful scene. I like the rigid structure of the man made brickwork which has now been slowly taken over, and softened, by nature again. I also love the concept of seeing something just beyond what is right in front of us (see my bio for more explanation of this), and so the path beyond the archway takes me, and hopefully the viewer, to another place filled with the possibility of peace.
Although this is predominantly a watercolour work, I have used touches of soft pastel in some areas to create the soft and warm sunlight filtering through the trees and undergrowth, playing with textures and giving plenty for the eye to look at while leading the viewer forward into the beyond.” Helen Worthington
