Description

“When I first saw the reference photo by Lesley Groves, I was drawn to the fabulous water colours of turquoise, blues and greens she had captured in this picture. The sleekness of the seal and the way her body was just beneath the frothy waves is so delightful that I really wanted to try and recreate it in a very loose watercolour painting.

I find the colours uplifting and that the froth and bubbles add a feeling of exhilaration, of ‘breaking through’ to be able to see above the water. The shine in Celia’s eye is so soulful and reflective, and seems to sparkle.

Concentrating on good details to represent the seal’s face first, I then built the loose splashy water using depths of dark and light colours to create the undulations around Celia’s form. The fun was in reserving the white areas for the froth using masking fluid, and then, when this was removed, filling in tiny gaps to join the water into a cohesive background.”  Helen Worthington
