“Another of my series entitled ‘Doorways, Gateways and Portals to Beyond’, and following on from my other painting of a scene in Anglesey (Island Gateway), this is the lighthouse on Llandwyn Island, off the beach of Newborough on Anglesey in North Wales.

This island beyond an island is an idyllic place of peace and serenity, and at the far end of the island itself is this now disused lighthouse. Where would we be without light? This lighthouse used to provide a beacon to those beyond its safe shores, guiding and reassuring passing sailors on their journeys. Now it is a portal to those past days and still remains a gatekeeper for those out at sea looking at the island in hope of refuge.

The watercolour washes are layered shades of greens, with coloured ink lines to create the sense of the lush grass blowing in the sea breeze. The solid and dependable form of the lighthouse and rocks is made by several light washes of watercolour, further enhanced with pen and ink in various colours, giving a windswept feel to the piece.”  Helen Worthington
