Leanne Dunstan (Red Betty)

Leanne Dunstan Avatar 400Hi, I’m Red Betty, also known as Leanne. I am the artist behind the creation of the Natural Quirks collection. The name Red Betty has been with me a long time: ‘Red’ as I am a Scottish redhead, ‘Betty’ in memory of my Grandma. Born in Aberdeen, I studied at Gray’s School of Art. I now live in the northwest of England with my husband and two young sons.
For almost two decades I worked as an in-house designer in a variety of industries. I decided to leave as I desperately missed painting and felt that the time had come to start my own creative journey and what emerged was The Natural Quirks Collection.
The Natural Quirks collection is inspired by my passion for the natural world. The illustrations are originally hand-painted in watercolours and woven together with flora and fauna, using colour to bring fun and flamboyance to each piece.  I would consider my work as modern, because of its format of colour, design and painting style. It holds very much the essence of Natural History Archives and our living world around us, to which we humans are naturally drawn to.
I wanted to create something the viewer could connect with, through characters and stories drawn from my own experiences. All the Artworks have a story to tell and it has been amazing how much viewers connect with the stories as well as appreciating the Art. What I’ve learnt about my work and the stories they get people talking. They are all personal to me but for everyone to relate to and connect with, talk about and share. It has the power to connect people, shared stories have led to tears.
All of the hand-painted original and digital art along with the stories have been animated, please see the links here to view: Natural Quirks on Vimeo
I hope these illustrations inspire you too, and you too can find a connection with them and their stories. They are all here in my Gallery as Fine Art Cards. Red Betty x
