“I really wanted to capture the graceful movement of this gorgeous sea turtle through the tropical blue-green waves. Using plenty of washes of watercolour to create the background, I applied granulation fluid to the area in front of him to represent the texture of the water as the turtle is moving through it. The sun is shining onto his back and is refracted in the sea, creating subtle ‘beams’ of light which illuminate the shell.

There was a good degree of detail required to create the intricate patterning on his flippers, and I took care to try to give them a realistic appearance. As a lover of all nature and the creatures who share our world, for me the gentle turtle is an ambassador of calm and determination as it lives its’ life in the waves. They remind us of their serene presence and help us to connect to the waters around our beautiful planet.”
